Calculators in early learning

Go to List of calculator activities

Using calculators for learning

The uninformed, general attitude to the use of calculators at any age appears to be that using them is "cheating". This is understandable, if regrettable.

Calculators have built in them the structure of the place value system, the use of signs and symbols and mathematical ideas such as decimal notation and negative numbers. This makes them ideal for children learning mathematical ideas.

Calculators are excellent for:

  • exploring number patterns.

  • encouraging the important mathematical ideas prediction, estimation and approximation giving immediate feedback
  • learning to understand the structure of the place value system
  • using the constant function to explore repeated addition
  • for the introduction of decimal notation and negative numbers
  • for handling large numbers which often fascinate children
